Re: maggots in wheelie bin

This is really simple to be honest tie the food up in a plastic bag then but it in the bin making sure the lid is shut.

Thats it Flys will not eat through plastic to lay the eggs so with two layers of plastic between the flys and the meat it will never be an issue. If the bin lid is not shutting correctly either get it replaced or fill the lid with rubber filler (used on roofs etc) to make it fly tight.

I think the Borough Council must be fairly "advanced" in Harrow - food waste is recycled as compost, but I bloomin' sure they wouldn't take it (and I'd get a hefty fine to boot ) if I wrapped it in a plastic bag!

Re: maggots in wheelie bin

If we can make sure the disinfectants are used diluted, or are at least 'green' (Jeyes used at the right concentration shouldn't harm the environment, so the say, but still all thoses warnings...)
I find it odd to 'recycle to save the environment' but still chuck lots of disinfectant around?

Re: maggots in wheelie bin

You could buy a mosquito net (from camping shops)with impregnated insecticide usually pyrethrum (sp.?), and fix it over the top of the bin tightly. Or cut it up into pieces that will tack onto a frame that you put inside the top of the bin under the lid.

Are well you see, as "advanced" as you must be we don't have any maggots

We do plastics bottles and cans, card, paper and packaging and garden waist but the rest of the rubbish goes from a plastic bag in the kitchen bin to the plastic bin outside.
Leaving waist food anywhere is asking for it if it's not covered in something.

Kayleigh the gf found biscuit weavels in the dog food bags once (bad patch apparently, shop said it would be ok but, even i would not feed it to the dog) Anyway you could here the screams for about 100 yards

I think the neighbours though I'd finally had enough here I spent 3 days explaining what had happened and getting dirty looks until they knew

Re: maggots in wheelie bin

I opened my bin on Saturday and about a dozen greenbottles flew out. A quick dose of Kybosh soon sorted that out

God knows what the neighbors think here then..I scream running out of the greenhouse..Yesterday I lifted the lid and ran off screaming as there were fly eggs all on the plastic wheelie bin liner..

Don't tell me they only lay eggs on meat and not plastic. Disgusting creatures.

Looking at this from a ecological point of view how about filling the bin with spiders

You sceamed at fly eggs ?????

If you use a wheelie bin bag - which you should - just squirt a thick layer of fly spray around the bin rim plus what I've already said I do - I've not had any maggots at all this summer

When I was a young and beautiful ships ossifer we frequently got weevils in our sugar and flour. If we complained they were weighed and this weight deducted from our meat ration.

I too was once an ossifer. We got weevils in the breakfast cereal, pour on loads of milk and they float so you can skim them off.

Thats a bit of a nonsense statement!

If you have a maggot problem, you're throwing out too much food. Buy and cook what you need, don't overdo it

Just think of the opportunity that we wasted. An in-depth study of the ecology of ships cereal and sugar with a nice thesis at the end, could have been professors by now.

But back to Kayleighs livestock, this is worth a study. How come some bins gets 'em and some don't? Is it temperature related? Is there a hidden conspiracy behind this,I mean someone is getting the funds for next years hols at £3 a pop for cleaning

Re: maggots in wheelie bin

The flies are attracted to "off" smells - "off" meat, "off" eggs etc but not veggies. Also poop (from pet litter - should be flushed - and nappies - good luck with those).

They will lay their eggs as close to the source of the smell as they can, and plastic absolutely does not keep smells in, so they will lay around the rim of the bin if that's as close as they can get.

Foil does keep some smells in, but it's expensive to use it just for the bin. I keep meaty leftovers, eggshells, catfood pouches and even kitchen paper that's had any kind of contact with meat on it in the fridge until bin day, and get no maggots.

I remember the "good old days" before bin-liners, and the smell of a ripe dustbin on a summer's day. I remember lots of wasps, but no maggots, but I think that was because like most people we had some sort of fire and bones went on it. There wasn't any left-over meat - you ate that.

Re: maggots in wheelie bin

The bin has not been emptied now for 3 weeks due to our holiday..Its very smelly atm.

We do put in a bin liner in as mentioned earlier, we also put dog poo in there wrapped in a perfume nappy sack that doesn't help with the smell..

I have put jays fluid all around the rim and the flies have stopped trying to get in.

Re: maggots in wheelie bin

Hi
To try and detract the flies - which always find a way in ........ I have bought a small space fly repellent and have adhered it to the inside of my wheelie bin lid by means of sticy back velcro and I've got another one attached by string via the bin lid handles - I try to remember to remove them both on bin day - don't want to lose them LOL. We've had a few maggots this summer - not sure if it's my repellents or the fact that it hasn't been very hot this summer.
