Theres a road near me that has loads of them new speed humps to stop speeding and dying etc. the bus drives straight over them and the back of the bus is thrown upwards and it goes DOOSH! Its quite fun at the back - bit like a roller coaster

| | | Re: Public Transport I've just been asked how to get to Ashstead to Heathrow. I though 'no problem' and after googling saw Ashstead Station come up. I went to the site, expecting it to leap from the page that trains run from 'A' to 'B' passing through the station. I left the site 5 mins later, still no the wiser where the trains come from and go to at Ashstead! Eventually we got there via another google.
Some while ago I wanted to know the times of the trains that run between Watford Junction and St Albans Abbey (the 'Bricket Wood Flyer'). When I 'phoned (Network Rail?) I was told that there was no railway between these two locations, and I'd have to go into London and then out again. I gave up trying to explain to them that there was in fact a line and that I'd been on it many times!

| | | Re: Public Transport My Daughters Car broke down this morning so she had to get a Bus home, she waited 20 minutes at the bus stop which Is just a 30 second walk from my house, she returned soaked and very cold. Fortunately her friend rang her and offered to pick her up and take her home. Public Transport In the Winter months Is a Rubbish way of travelling, I'd rather walk and get wet and usually end up beating the bus home anyway rather than just standing there waiting for a bus that could still be 5 miles away or it doesn't turn up at all. Where have all the Bus Shelters gone, that's what I want to know. |

If it had gone thro I was going to suggest all those affected by 'double charges' ie: congestion charge and road tax, should stop paying their road tax - either that or the whole of Great Manchester should go on the dole .... I'm joking of course - but I'm only half joking

I work in Leeds and I'm sure if Manchester had been given the green light, Leeds wouldn't be far behind, infact I'm sure they have already had trials |

Yes I did see it on the news the same night that other towns and cities were thinking about it - hopefully they will now stop thinking about how to get money - twice - out of folks and improve public transport for those who do want it and can use it and leave those of us who don't want it or can't use it for whatever reason to get on with our lives............

| | | Re: Public Transport Here are two ways I think they could reduce rush hour congestion:-
Make kids walk to school where possible, not driven up to the door (has anybody driven past a school on a morning or evening )
Stop vans and HGV during the rush hour as there are as many of them on the roads as cars do they all need to be travelling at rush hour
I am now getting my tin hat ready for the stick I'm going to get from mums and white van men |

I am now getting my tin hat ready for the stick I'm going to get from mums and white van men | I am sorry, but this suggestion is idiotic, the drivers could be driving miles and need to drive in Rush Hour. |

| | | Re: Public Transport As someone who holds a CPC in National Road Haulage Operations, I don't think it's idiotic at all. With careful planning it's perfectly achievable. It would be very unpopular with HGV drivers though mainly because it would mean a huge amount of night work.
Personally, I'd go further and take all long-distance freight off the roads completely. Perishable goods should go by rail and non-perishables by barge. Of course, we'd need to restore both the rail and the canal networks to make this possible so it'll never happen but it looks like the sensible solution to me.

And whilst suggesting stopping all HGV's and white van was a bit too far I'm sure it must be possible for some to delay their journeys to avoid rush hour |

| | | Re: Public Transport I generally like public transport but there are so many things that seem to go wrong with it. I have to get the train down to my course from Aberdeen to Shrewsbury now and then and there have been too many missed connections for me to enjoy the journey as I just sit there and worry about missing my course! At home I use buses, but in Aberdeen it's so expensive! A single ticket to get from my house to town (a twenty minute journey if that) is £2.00, and a return is £3.00. I would be cheaper driving and paying for parking. Then you always get unpleasant drunk people or teenagers ruining the peace and quiet also!
So overall I put up with public transport, but if it was cheaper, cleaner, more punctual and quieter I would love it! |

| | | Re: Public Transport Good but it wouldn't just be a matter of restoring the railways and anals but of rebuilding them. In the case of canals, building much larger ones than we've had historically. NW Europe has always had broader, deeper canals and thus could take bigger loads - the ideal, low-energy mode of transport for heavy goods. Quote:

1) The inside lane is for HGV vehicles.
2) The middle lane is for HGV vehicles overtaking those on the inside lane.
3) The outside lane is for White Vans doing 90+mph.

| I think that is an unfair generalisation. not all teenagers are drunken chavs with loud bassy music on in the back of the bus. Some on WAB are pretty decent folk
