| Rather like slow cookers, I suppose. I think I prefer quick cooked stuff now, fresh and crispy, but I do like some good old stews. We used to use the very slow oven in a Rayburn for long slow cooking when I was farming, cheap fod cooked for a long time is very good when you have been out in the cold all day. |

| | | Re: The price of food....and everything really Am going to look into the haybox idea, sounds good.
I had a wood burning Rayburn for cooking and central heating, was very happy to see the back of it and get oil cooker...eek:
On a daily basis, wood is quite alot of work, dusty cleaning out, carrying it etc. It needs sawing up, or chainsawing up so uses petrol. And quite large quantities to keep a cooker/central heating going for extended periods...
Often, because of quantities needed, the wood was not sufficiently seasoned and sometimes damp, and the fire was hard to keep going if not around.
So am very sad about oil prices, will have to wear overcoat I think |

jaki | My mum used to regularly use a hay box at guide camp they only had a fire type thing to cook on (bricks, corrugated iron sheet on which the fire was built and then a grill suspended over the flames with more bricks) good for sausages and things but for stews the hay box was the best tool.
going back to the bread making I just dusted off my old bread maker (10 years old now!!) and I haven't used it in around 2 years - and at least one of those years it was out in my mum's shed!! Its just turned out a lovely loaf!! Good on Panansonic in an age where technological gadgets seem built to last a year only! |

| | | Re: The price of food....and everything really I know exactly how you feel Gill, most things these days seem purposely built for 12 months and 2 weeks and usually go kputt right after the 1 year guarantee has run out
