| | | Re: Obesity What has changed over the last 30 years or so? Children used to walk to school, play outside, do school sports, play games in the playground. Eat regular meals etc. Although most children love chips and sweets, the exercise they took stopped them getting fat. So if you were a child with a normal weight it was less likely that you would be an obese adult.
Now toddlers are fat, small children are obese and there is more diabetes in children, and it goes on from there into adult life with weight problems. The newer generations have shorter life expectancies than their parents which is a bit sad The UK has the fattest population in Europe.
I've always found it harder to get weight off once it's on, and don't eat puddings (cept occasionally) cakes or have biscuits in the house(because I eat them all) or drink much alchohol, because I immediately put on weight. And I don't eat dairy or meat, although these don't necessarily make people fat in the right amounts. Some people won't put on weight whatever they do, but they are the lucky ones.
The main factors are fast and pre-prepared food, and the food manufacturers need to take some of the blame for selling rubbish food to people, lack of exercise, and the opportunities for it, and over-eating because of lack of time and snacking, and comfort eating!
Humans are programmed to love fat, sugar and salt because these are biologically highly valuable foods for us, but if we eat too much of them and don't use up the fuel then on come the pounds |

Mark H | All the booze drunk by teenagers probably doesn't help their weight! And adults too |

| | | Re: Obesity This weight gain lark is different for everybody, Everyones metabolism is different and as stated some people can eat and eat and not put an ounce on,,,
But who ever you are the same facts apply, A pound of fat is roughly equal to 3500 calories , So if you injest 3500 cals more than you burn you will add a pound, Or if you burn 3500 more cals than you take in you will lose a pound,
So A bottle of wine has around 500 cals:
So if i stopped my half a bottle of wine a day I would lose around a a pound every two weeks,,,,But on the other hand I like myself as I am,,,,and what about those poor south american vinyard owners,,,, I better keep drinking,

| | | Re: Obesity Is that accurate? I thought it was the Scots rather than the British in general. On an overview I would have expected it to be the Germans .... but whatever, it seems that we're all going the same way as the USAmericans (except for the French and various Mediterranean folk - even there, there is a problem where youngsters start being trendy and eating at McDonalds
Do FcD put addictive substances in their produce - to make people overweight and immobile? So they can't escape? Quote:

| | | Re: Obesity I have to say the Jamie Oliver experiment with the school meals was realy interesting.
I work part time for a well known supermarket and the food they serve in the canteen is absolutely disgusting and so unhealthy. Everything is deepfried and nothing is fresh. Most staff cant cook and even if they could their budget is probably a pittance and time restraints. Just because you have a food heigene certificate it doesn't mean you're a chef. Before the smoking ban came in we also had the smoke room (stained dark yellow from all the tar and nicotine) situated in the canteen, it made me feel sick everytime somebody opened the door. And back to the food (chips every day) it doesn't effect me too much as I'm not there all the time but it must seriously effect the health of the full time staff who have breakfast lunch and dinner there.
