Re: Here we go again

only 16 cows affected so far, If 2001 is anything to go by,
Its time to wish Defra good luck in making it worse.
For starters, They are saying its a strong possibility that its airbourne.
So why only a ten mile exclusion zone??

Funny Defra seems to be good at that.

Re: Here we go again

The government in its wisdom has declared this foot and mouth outbreak is due to an airbourne infestation, due mainly to a large influx of European butterflies, and is taking all neccessary steps to halt the said invasion, all able bodied unemplyed in the South are to be issued with butterfly nets and be positioned along the south coast of England. only joking lol.But if some madcap MP sees this and thinks its a good idea, my apologies in advance to the unemployed of the South....... Re: Here we go again

A second farm is confirmed and has had 102 cows culled. The farm is within the 3km protection zone set up.

Re: Here we go again

its also now official that several farm based advisory services are discontinuing site visits until such time as the outbreak is declared to be over. so far only two farms have been confirmed and all the stock from those has been culled. the exclusion zone and surveillence zone are likely to remain in effect for a few weeks, as foot and mouth has an incubation period of about 7days. i find it quite disturbing that the strain is the same as the one in the lab, and that the lab is now making the vaccinations.

i hope this one doesn't spread to a national epidemic, i'm not sure british livestock farming could survive another one.

i notice that the EU has been very quick to introduce a ban on UK meat...

Re: Here we go again

It's now said to have been spread by the laboratory workers themselves through poor hygiene practices - wearing the same shoes and clothing in the lab as well as out, taking the bacteria to their own homes. Sad if it's true.

Sad? It would be an absolute disgrace.

I used to work for the Agricultural & Food Research Council. It is inconceivable that security standards could have fallen so low.

This makes me so angry - especially if it turns out to have been preventable.
