| | | Tree Preservation Orders With tree preservation orders it is certainly true that you do not know what you've got till its gone. Trees that you take for granted and assume will be there for ever those beautiful Beeches,Oaks and the ones you do not know the names of ........
No tree preservation orders and Suddenly they have gone or are in the process of being cut down You cannot stop the process completely but YOU can slow it down make people think, every tree is an eco-system in its own right and part of a larger one The placing of a tree preservation order can only take a telephone call to
your local council they will send someone out to look at it and catalogue it Aims and Objectives
If every member of this website saved one tree apiece with a tree preservation order it would make a difference. I saw a group of trees cut down that had featured in all the advertising brochures for a new housing development Nobody had put a tree preservation order on them, they just assumed they would be left standing as in the picture!!!!

| | | Re: Tree Preservation Orders How can I protect a tree that developers are going to chop down
The tree was saved twenty years ago, now the developers are moving in. Where do I go to try to protect it. The web link gives information on TPO but not how to get one protected. |

| | | Re: Tree Preservation Orders Sadly, placing a TPO on a tree does not actually protect it from developers. The fines for felling a TPO tree are a maximum of £20k but very rarely are the maximum penalties imposed. Often, where a group of TPO trees are felled, one fine is imposed, and even then not at the maximum level.
When put against the potential profits from a development, these fines are insignificant. Clearing a bunch of trees, which impede a housing development, actually increases the value of the site, and so the cost of the fine is just another line in the balance sheet. If you can fell a tree for £20k and get another house in that sells for £250k - well, you do the maths.

| | | Re: Tree Preservation Orders London is in danger of losing most of its large trees because of insurance companies. They want them removed because of subsidence and they say they soak up all the water making houses crack (most are on clay soil) Even if it has a TPO on the tree it won't save it...In the past the trees were just pruned now they have to go completely- it's going to change the whole look of the city. Street trees are being replaced by little trees that can't fall on anyone or make them skid on the leaves so the council doesn't get sued! |

However if development has already started it seems likely that the Developer will have had outline planning permission at the very least and that will almost certainly have addressed issues concerning any standing trees. Either the Planners wil have stipulated which if any trees should remain or have decided that the trees can go, if the latter is the case you may have an uphill battle.
