| | | Smart meters Apparently the energy companies would like us all to have these smart meters, which transmit data direct to the energy companies. The software
will flag up daily consumption and when the house is empty, no consumption.
The Dutch government tried to make it compulsary, but the clever Dutch public could see the errosion of privacy element in its introduction and told them to bowl their hoop. What do you think?

| | | Re: Smart meters I think its a good idea. At least your getting charged for what you use rather than over charged by a "estimated reading".
Why is it an invasion of privacy?
The system monitors your energy consumption, just like the old system of meter readers, but more cost effectively.
If big brother wanted to check up on your movements then there are already plenty of ways for them to do it.
What the people of the Netherlands objected to,and quite rightly, was the proposed removal of their freedom of choice.

| | | Re: Smart meters 'They' ( ie the Electricity/Gas people ) will not need to bother you at your home ever again - unless you have a form of Maintenance Agreement*(s) with them.
I see this remote meter reading gadget as LESS invasive. And it gives the user several ways to monitor their fuel expenditure (s) .
We aren't talking Water Board here - the Water Board TRY to make you pay for water that originates ( ie by a spring) - on YOUR land ! Disgusting !
I don't know if there has been a legal challenge against these massive, ( & sometimes foreign-owned ) - but I'd be interested in knowing the outcome , if there has even been such a challenge. |
