| | | Gulf Stream Drift I see that there is a perceived further threat to the Gulf Stream Drift. There is so much fresh water floating on the highly saline Arctic that it could affect the thermohaline current which carries cold water south to the Gulf and brings warm water north, giving us our temperate climate.
We are DOOMED! DOOMED I SAY, DOOMED!
Any excuse not to mow the lawn eh lads.

| | | Re: Gulf Stream Drift I remember hearing a lecture on this about five/six years ago. The prognosis then was that the Gulf Stream could slow down/stop as quickly as in twenty five years or so and we in the UK could expect an imminent ice-age. This, slightly alarmist, view actually has the opposite to the intended effect; people think, 'it's going to happen - there's nothing I can do to change it' and so perpetuate the behaviours that compound the problem. Climate change is serious business, but as the forthcoming crisis will create disaster in decades, rather than days or weeks, I think few people will be prepared to limit their own choices for the sake of generations to come.
So, sad to say, I think you might be right - we're DOOMED! |

Ric | You're not very up-to-date on this one Rick. Recent work done on the Gulf Stream suggests that it has only a minor effect on our climate and if it was to dissappear it would make very little difference. The Gulf Stream Myth http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/res/div...al_QJ_2002.pdf
What this means is that everything will stay as it is now until the next Ice-age starts.
So were doomed whichever way you look at it!!

The shifts in prevailing winds are far more significant. Still 'n' all, something else will turn up and we'll be even DOOMEDER. (Still trying to get out of mowing the lawn.)

| | | Re: Gulf Stream Drift I mend the guy next door's computer, he cuts our grass (not quite that rigid, but...). I hate grass cutting, it is quite a recent slavery and very destructive. Replace all lawnmowers with a scythe.
23 % of all emissions of of something or other are probably caused by the expulsion of wind brought on by people handmowing lawns.

I don't do ironing unless someone needs a shirt, skirt or trousers for a special occasion. When other women look horrified, I point out how environmentally friendly I am and how much energy I'm saving |

Ric | What about dismantling all Wind Turbines and turning them into Lawn-mowers? |
