Jim | Not only that - but this sand, if used as part of the Concrete mixture - would have to be very thoroughly rinsed, as it would have Salt in it !

The idea of havng these in the Desert areas seems a bit silly to me - simply because I've long thought those places to be ideal for siting those Massive Solar-Power generators which use reflective/curved mirror & lense systems.
If ever there were sites for those, it's somewhere like the Sahara. |

Piezo technology will produce a decent voltage, but trying to develop the technology sufficiently to produce any worthwhile amount of continuous current would be prohibitively expensive, and, in my opinion, not worth the effort when there are far better solutions available.
These things may well power the mentioned (low current) LED's, but the carbon footprint/usable electrical output ratio must be astronomical.
Their best use would probably be as piezo ignitors to light the gas on a nearby gas powered generating plant.
