Solar powered photo-voltaic arrays in desert areas; tidal power; the chimneys that I described elsewhere; nuclear fission until we can get fusion working; hydroelectric. That's off the cuff, in no particular order.

| | | Re: Do Wind Turbines Kill Birds? In the light of the Dorset school story there's many a Gloucester dweller who would have these contraptions installed on every public building in the city. As I see it the Gulls are providing a valuable street cleaning service which would otherwise be carried out by large numbers of rats....
(Sorry slightly off-topic)

| | | Re: Do Wind Turbines Kill Birds? As mostly towards Mainland Britain the prevailing Wind is the Sou-Westerlies and Westerly winds.......they don't bring with them many ( or - any?) Migrant Bird populations - I think those come via the Mainland of Europe and Scandinavia.
So if the majority of turbines are situated on this Western-ish side of the Island of G.B. - there shouldn't be that much of a problem for our feathered friends who are either Summer or Winter visitors.
However - I don't think Windpower is a serious alternative to Nuclear Power.
Solar Power is a great idea-but as we aren't situated around the Mediteranean Sea - no.
HEP - Fine in Norway.
This ain't Norway. It's flatter, dryier , and more populated.
What I would REALLY, REALLY want to see - is more WAVE Power research ! So long as there is a moon up there - there wil be tides. Regular as Clockwork, and nil pollution, (except the usual manufacturing ones which would relate to any form of any power.)
- So what IS the downside to this ?
As far as I can see - simply LACK of research.
Come on, you Government Departments and Scientists out there -get busy on Wave Power.
In the meantime - it has to be Nuclear Power. And at least we have a tougher regulatory body in this country than say, Russia.
