I think wind turbines look elegant and beautiful and when people use the arguement of bird being knocked out of the sky and killed by them i wonder to myself...do they own a cat though, i bet a lot of them do. |

| | | Re: Swedish nuclear reactor failure Lewisa, no one here thinks that coal and oil will be the power of the future. They are running out faster than uranium. What I am trying to make a case for is that wind and waves are only not working because the designs are so bad. There is a massive amount of energy available in rivers tides waves and wind, enough for all our needs. It should not be impossible to invent efficient ways of harvesting it. The reason it seems so difficult is because there is an immense amount of vested interest blocking its progress. |

| | | Re: Swedish nuclear reactor failure Just a few toughts on this thread. Things are seldom as simple as they appear. Uranium Mining
Will not have the death rate of coal mining, as uranium is high volume mining and so is, as far as I am aware, only open cast with massive machines and few men. Mni House Turbines
These are going to be highly inefficient. Wind speeds drop rapidly the closer you get to the ground, and the more muddle there is on the ground the lower the winspeeds. It drops by staggering amounts though I can not quote figures, I'm sure google will give them. Hotels in Kenya
Avoiding going to luxury African hotels will be a two-edged sword.
They provide employment and profit for the countries - sadly too often too much of the profit is raked off to non-national comglomerates.
I lived in the Gambia some years ago - shutting the Hotels would have devastated the country, even though the tourist trade created lots of other problems (prostitution, pulling people off the land, corruption, crime etc.) |
