| | | Are Hybrid Cars rubbish? Jeremy Clarkson on top gear maintains that all hybrids/battery cars are rubbish, i was wondering how many people agree/disagree and why.
Personally I think they are pretty good however their MPG is just under an efficiant diesel estate car, so they are not saving the enviroment yet, so they are not as brilliant as they seem.
your thoughts please

| | | Re: Are Hybrid Cars rubbish? 4 x 4s are fine for people who need them but why buy one if you live in a city when a car would do the same job.

| | | Re: Are Hybrid Cars rubbish? Hybrids? Now you've got my attention. I drive a Toyota Prius and I would say it is better than a diesel (diesel harms the environment just as much as petrol, imho, just in a different way, plus the fumes make me feel really sick.) I'd rate it about the sama as a small car for petrol consumption, with the added bonus that the engine cuts out when you are in a traffic jam or going very slowly (and so is quiet - you have to be patient behind walkers).
No, it certainly does not solve the problem and I think the answer is likely to be in a different direction. If we must have so much personal transport, its going to be fueled in a totally different way. |

| | | Re: Are Hybrid Cars rubbish? Sorry, I meant the petrol engine cuts out - it is a smooth transition to electric, there is no risk of the car suddenly stopping, or anything dangerous like that!) |

| | | Re: Are Hybrid Cars rubbish? I read somewhere that the prius has big lithium batteries, and the lithium mines in Canada are poisioning the area around them (plus the carbon to get the lithium out). Mind you might be right wing propaganda.
But logically a hybrid car with a big heavy battery is not going to be as efficient when travelling along as a typical petrol car, but in a stop-go city environment it has its advantages.
Electric cars are pointless unless its more effiecent to burn the fuel, convert it to electric, send it through miles of wires/cables and charge up the battery than to just burn the fuel in the engine. Unless you charge it on renewable energy of course... |
