DOH ! | The reason radiators are generally positioned under windows is to counteract downdraughts of colder air. These are not draughts coming in through gaps etc. but merely caused by the fact that the window glass will always be the coldest part of the room.
Air cooled by meeting the glass would fall to low level, resulting in a cooler lower part of the room. (ie. where you would be).
Having a radiator at that point, allows the cooled air to be re-heated (to a higher temperature than the lower room level ambient), thus causing the warmed air to rise, producing a convection current of air circulating all around the room.
It is worth noting though, that at least half of the heat from a radiator will be from the rear of the front panel. It is very wasteful of energy to have long curtains covering any below window radiators, and even more wasteful to tuck long curtains behind the radiator panel. (As this generally blocks the airflow to the rear face of the panel, preventing heat flow).
It's also worth noting that radiator shelves will reduce a radiator's efficiency by about 5%, so it's best to avoid them wherever you can.
Regards
Mike. |

| | | Re: Open doors.... to Mick_S I don't know about Ramsgate but my local council seem to think we need the street lighting ON at midday and by 02:30 off again? Perhaps the council building is a dark and dingy place? And yes if I get another twee notice about turning the little red eye off I shall have to take severe action. |

| | | Re: Open doors.... The shops are still at it, even with the temperatures at or below freezing, doors are still wide open and the heaters just inside blowing hot air in to the street. I have to add that one or two of the smaller independent shops locally seem to have taken the hint, but some of the chains still spout "It's company policy" when I ask why the doors are wedged open.
