If you do have environmental concern, you would find very little arguement for continued use of tungsten filament incandescent lamps.
As regards to relative brightness, I am inclined to agree that the brightness of the very low wattage (6 - 9 watt) lamps is not very good, but if you compare the brightness of a 20-watt lamp, with normal 60 -100 watt tungsten filament lamps you will find the low wattage lamp brighter.
As I've said in an earlier post though, you need to give these Low Energy Lamps a couple of minutes to "warm up", before they are operating at full efficiency.

btw homebase are doing 18w (100w equiv) cfls for 49p each. offer to run til xmas
