I am going to make a massive effort to stay out of peoples way and drive economically. I hate driving fast and people making me feel unsafe, so why the hell should I actually pay for it via the fuel I burn!?
I drive a pretty small/medium car and just lately others in more powerful vehicles make me feel so intimidated, so I end up flooring it to keep myself on the road and my poor car really makes a noise.
I've even had people flash me (whilst I'm doing 60, which I think is a decent enough speed) from behind, basically telling me to break the law. They must really love their jobs if they want to get to work that quick.
I also worry about cyclists, wildife and children, they wouldn't stand a chance.

| | | Re: Hyper Miling I have noticed that some people drive at 10mph below the signposted limit,
fair enough, but why don't they pull over to allow others to go by? Any attempt to pass is met with flashing headlights, great hootings and finger waving (assuming you succeed in passing) who are these people to decide to set a speed limit of their own?
I travel country roads frequently and drive to the conditions and posted limits
driving even more slowly through villages. I once came off the road and through a hedge (with concrete fence-posts) due to black ice so you cannot
be too careful.
All this steady driving nets me around 55 to the gallon I have managed 60+
but you need to maintain a steady speed the 10mph below brigade make this difficult to achive particularly if you have a schedule to maintain such as going to work
It is possible to get an engine chipped (but you must inform your insurance company) diesel respond best,it is possible to improve torque and mpg which would/could make for more relaxed and economic driving
I think that possibly a minimum speed limit could improve traffic flow especially away from traffic lights where one dog in a manger can cause huge tail backs.
Incidentally I believe coasting is illegal and as long as the engine is running you are possibly using just as much fuel, there are legal freewheeling hubs fitted to some 4x4's

This is what makes my blood boil! This has happened a couple of times - I'm doing 70, in the inside lane, when I see a car in my rear view mirror hurtling towards me at break neck speed and then he slams his brakes on, glares at me and sits on my backside for the next few miles? Confusing, especially as there is nothing in the outside lane?? It's really scarey!!

| | | Re: Hyper Miling I used to live near Budleigh Salterton, delightful place but not the abode of many racing drivers. Parking spaces are sparse, and a friend asked someone to reverse their car a little to leave another space (very politely, he was, and looked to be, a gentleman).
"Young man, I have been driving for 35 years and I have never needed to use reverse gear. I have no intention of using it now". Again, said very nicely but rather distantly.
I bet their fuel consumption was low, and their average speed. |

| | | Re: Hyper Miling I Drive an average 40000 miles a year commuting and work related. But I suffer with Scyiatica in my right leg. I find using cruise control a lot helps me to stay in an easier driving posture.
I now drive leaving a slightly larger gap to the car in front than most people , I drive 80% of the time out of town on cruise control. Because of this I brake and accelerate far less often and feel much less stressed than I used to I also have found that my fuel consumption has improved by between 10%and 15%. Try it,,,
