No impact from Energy Saving Day

Title says it all really but full details can be found here: BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | No impact from Energy Saving Day

They're blaming poor publicity and the fact that yesterday was a bit colder than the previous few days. I'm not so sure. I think it's at least partly because those of us who care about the environment already switch off all unnecessary appliances so there's not much more we can do. Those who don't care will take no notice however much publicity it gets.

When local councils start replacing existing street lights with ones that don't throw most of their light up into the sky, then I will think about not leaving my tv in standby mode

My thoughts as well. I think we can safely say that as it wasn't mentioned on WAB in the run up, then the publicity really was very poor.

I have to disagree with richardkm, I think its up to all of us to do our bit regardless of how small an impact it will make. If nothing else it will save you money.

Re: No impact from Energy Saving Day

Okay, perhaps lack of publicity was a big factor after all!

I'll open a poll to see who had heard about it/did anything about it...

We've got enough streetlights outside our house to make it like daylight at night, it's crazy, but we use low energy bulbs in all the right places in our house and turn things off standby because that's something we have control of.

But what does it really cost you to turn your TV off standby the effort of having to walk a few steps to turn it on without the remote...
the trouble with the attitude that you are implying is that then nothing would get done- there will be always someone or something that you can use as an excuse for inaction on your own part...
true on its own its an insignificant difference but once you can multiply that effect by billions and more importantly billions doing so because they believe it is morally something they should do... well then you can get somewhere, attitudes have to change first

Re: No impact from Energy Saving Day

Personally I try to save energy wherever I can, because I can't afford not to, but at the same time I have some sympathy for richardkm's comment, some years have gone by since it was announced that new measures were in hand to increase the efficiency of street lighting, I have yet to see any evidence of of these measures being implemented, do any of you know of instances that will prove me wrong, just as a point of interest.
On the original point, I bet the energy companies breathed a sigh of relief that the saving day was a failure, just imagine the problems a massive fluctuation in demand would cause at the generating stations.

Sounds like you don't need light bulbs at all - just leave the curtains open and use mirrors!

Re: No impact from Energy Saving Day

i'd have to say i agree with you dave - no publicity and all of us energy conscious people already do the good things - wash at 30oC, energy saving lightbulbs, led spots, nothing on standby etc. we knew about it at work, but my jobs computer based so all i could do was switch my monitor off during lunch...

there's loads of stuff out there about sustainable living and energy saving, but its taking a while to filter through to the masses...
