Peter | If you are digging up the floor and want underfloor heating, that would be more efficient than radiators.
You would need to dig a large trench in the garden to install a ground source heat pump loop. Don't forget, the heating is not free energy - you need to run a condenser to increase the temperature of that gained in the ground.
It works like a large refrigerator in reverese. You are cooling the ground, transferring the heat to your under floor heating system which then radiates into the house.

The comment about financial viability in comparison with gas is probably a little out of date with recent rises in energy prices - and longer term,the ground source heat pump would be much more viable, although you would still rely on a source of electricity to run it.
You should be able to get a government grant to install one : Ground source heat pumps Overall maximum of £1,200 or 30% of the relevant eligible costs, whichever is the lower
