| | | Do caterpillars hibernate? The reason I ask is that this lunch time I found a small green caterpillar (cabbage white?) just inside my south facing front door. It was very sluggish but still alive. |

| | | Re: Do caterpillars hibernate? Welcome Lou-D. I think cabbage whites may have a second generation which I understand pupates and overwinters, then feeds on the likes of wallflowers. I too found a small green caterpillar in a bucket of water this week, so some caterpillars are definitely about just now. |

| | | Re: Do caterpillars hibernate? The short answer is yes.
Moths and butterflies spend the winter in all stages (egg, larva, pupa or adult) depending on the species. To find which does which you'll need to look at some books.

Might be something else, Lou-D. Any chance of a photograph?

henrya | I did try taking some photos earlier but found that I could not take a close up pic - it went all blurry. When I get home (after 5.30pm) I can try posting up one of the closer pics and see if you can make out what it is from that.
Can I post pics straight from my hard drive onto this site or will I have to go through an online photo site? |

I've put the caterpiller alongside an average length tea spoon to get an idea of size of it. |

| | | Re: Do caterpillars hibernate? Erm, I'll just point out, the head is at the top. The creature is actually defecating - charming! :-)
Sorry it's not a better photo but couldn't get camera to focus at close range.

| | | Re: Do caterpillars hibernate? It could be the small white but there are lots of other green caterpillars. They don't hibernate but will keep eating as long as there is warmth. Do you have any pot plants? Do they have any holes on the leaf? I had a quite large green caterpillar which comped up my basil and then pupated a months or so back .... | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
