| | | brown caterpillar Found this little chap right outside my front door. nearly stood on it.
i gave it a tiny poke with an old soft leave and there was a tiny bit of movement so i have scooped it up and brought inside. Clearly being warmer inside it has perked u and is moving a bit and gripping the old leaf now.
Would someone tell me
a) what is it?
b) what should i do with it?
It was on my block drive no where near any plants in fact the closest garden is about 50 yards away.
Should i keep it inside in a tub with soil leaves eyc or shoud i just put it back out and et nature take its course? |

| | | Re: brown caterpillar Its a large yellow underwing Noctua pronuba a very common species of moth which eats a wide range of plants often within lawns and rough grassland. They spend the winter as larvae, so the best thing to do would be releasing it back into a suitable area of habitat. Keeping caterpillars like this over the winter can cause more harm than good as you actually raise its metabolism which results in a speeded up metamorphosis. This means that it turns into a moth far to early then there is insufficient nectar(food), its too cold and no other members of the species are active so it can't breed. |
