Unidentified Larvae for ID

Hello all,

I was on a charity tree planting exercise this morning for a local childrens hospice and while digging I accidentally unearthed this...



Can anyone tell me what larvae this is? Hopefully you can get the scale and everything from the picture. Would it have been hibernating??? I placed it in a safe area of long grass.

It's the larva (singular.........plural is larvae) of one of the Ghost moths (Hepialidae). It lives underground and feeds on roots. Well done for releasing it safely.

Just had a look at the Ghost Moth - beautiful. Hopefully this one makes it!
