| | | Unknown caterpillars in Cumbria
Sorry photos a bit blurred, couldn't get the things to stop moving, apart from the twig like one.
Found on Oak and beech trees. Moved like an inchworm and hung from the trees on long threads so that they looked as if the were flying.
Any help much appreciated.
Bless you

| | | Re: Unknown caterpillars in Cumbria The first three are certainly inch-worms, members of the moth family Geometridae. Only for the third can I provide a tentative ID: I think this might be a Peppered Moth Biston betulariae as it has small lumps towards the end of the abdomen and the head might have two lobes.
Ideally photos of caterpillars need to be a bit closer to provide more detail: if you have a sample pot its often fairly straightforward to pop one in and get a better photo. Take lots of photos too and from different angles: often its easier to ID a caterpillar from side-on images than from above. |

| | | Re: Unknown caterpillars in Cumbria If you don't mind me piggy backing on your thread, Forest School, I've seen two more today at Kentmere Tarn that I don't recognise although I've seen the stripey one before.
Anyone care for a stab at ID? |
