| | | Beetle larva? Found this at East Blean Woods last weekend...
I'm quietly confident that it's a beetle larva, based mainly on it's jaws, but does anybody know which one?

| | | Re: Beetle larva? Its a Glow-worm. Difficult to tell if its adult or not because the adult female is "larviform". Strangely enough, male and female pupate in the normal beetle way, and the female adult emerges from the pupa looking exactly like a larva, though with a brighter light. |

| | | Re: Beetle larva? Cool!
Thanks both. I completely forgot to mention the length which was 3 to 4 centimetres.

The orange dots at the rear of the segments show that this isn't an adult female, the larvae do indeed emit two small points of light, the female glow worm as well as using its lights to attract mates ,can also use them to deter predators, and gently rolling the larva in an insect tube from side to side, will cause it to start emitting some light.
A quick internet search showed it to be known at the location you found it in Dave,I'm always pleased to find them. They are pretty cool.
Normally they would be up to an inch long, and I'm wondering whether you may have overestimated the size a bit.

I really must start to take better field notes when I find something that I'm completely clueless about, instead of trying to do it from memory.

| | | Re: Beetle larva? D'you know Deb, I rather think I am! I found this insect while positioning my tripod for the mating heath frits, so that was two insects I'd never seen before in one morning.
So far this year I've had four new moths turn up on my front door, including the toadflax brocade - becoming a bit more common around here but still quite rare.
And to top it all off, stag beetles! Stag Beetles
Long may my roll continue!
