Bees hatching??

I've just been clearing some dead leaves from behind pots at the front of my house and found several larvae cases (is that the right word?). There is also one which still has something in and keeps wriggling. I've put it in a pot on top of some dry grass for now - is that the best thing to do? It's in a warm place in the shade.

Are these bees?

Photos to follow - it's just taking a few minutes to get them off the memory card.

Any advice much appreciated.

They look a little like Moth or Cranefly pupae to me.

I thought they seemed very big to be moths, but we do get hawkmoths so I've just googled that and it looks like that's probably what they are. With any luck I'll see it emerging.....
