| | caterpillar ID ?? unfortunately I'm unable to upload an image but i was at the beach in the north east of england and every now and then in the sand dunes I kept passing a single caterpillar on a plant which had leaves similar to dandelion. They were quite large, jet black and furry. Any ideas ??? |

| | | Re: caterpillar ID ?? It definitely belongs to a moth of the Arctiinae subfamily.
The most likely contenders are the Wood Tiger, Garden Tiger, White Ermine (seems a bit late) & Ruby Tiger.
None of these are an exact match colour-wise to your photo. All (apart from White Ermine) overwinter in the larval stage.
Both Garden Tiger & Ruby Tiger are common & can be found on sand dunes - my guess is that it is one of these two...possibly a dark-haired variant of the Ruby Tiger larva?
Would you be able to give a more specific location? |
