| | | Two Caterpillars for ID Please I took these two pics recently. The strange thing is that I found each of them climbing up the side wall of my house. I put them on leaves and a stick to take their pics. The first pic was taken on 21st Sept and the second on Oct 10th. Thought this was quite late in the year to see caterpillars in N.Ireland. Anyway, help with IDs would be great.
Thanks, John. |

Not sure about the second one though |

Not sure about the second one though | Have you been on the Guinness Guinnessman?
I also think the 2nd picture is the Brimstone Moth and I have no idea on the 1st.

| | | Re: Two Caterpillars for ID Please I agree with the ID of the 1st larva (Bright-line Brown-eye).
However, I think the 2nd larva is definitely a Scalloped Hazel ( Odontopera bidentata).
See here: Eggs, Larvae, Pupae and Adult Butterflies and Moths
It has a characteristic 'small hump' on segment 8 (near rear end) and almost-vestigial prolegs on segments A4 & A5. |

I've taken your advice and after visiting the site, which is a great resource, I'm certain that you are right on this one.
Many thanks from N.Ireland.
