Hi my daughter found this caterpillar a couple of days ago . We put it in a tub with lots of airholes and since this morning there is a yellow spongy substance and what looks like maggots or larvae moving through it
Does this mean its going to start a cocoon ?

Hi, welcome to WAB.
It sounds to me that your caterpillar has been parasitised. This means that something has laid its' eggs inside the caterpillar and the larvae will feed on the caterpillar.
I might be wrong but someone should be along shortly with a more positive answer. |

I am not sure what is going on in the photo,but it looks like a large white butterfly caterpillar . |

It is indeed a Large White butterfly larva that has been parasitised by a Chalcid wasp.

This is from a Braconid wasp, chalcids tend to be parasites of pupa.
Check Cotesia most likely C.glomerata. |
