Unkown caterpillar


I found this caterpillar trying to get out of a cropfield (can't remember which crop) on 14 August. It got my attention as it was HUGE (4 inches/9cm). Can anyone tell me whether it's a butterfly or moth caterpillar, and what sort? Thank you.

Wow, you've got it! I've just looked it up and it looks the same, although the book I have doesn't mention size. Thanks for your help.
