Hairy black caterpillar with red stripe
Saw a jet black very hairy/spiny caterpillar with a red/rusty colour stripe down the length of it's back crawling across a track near a sea loch on the west coast of Scotland today. Could anybody tell me what type of caterpillar it could be please?

Possibly a White Ermine moth- check images in the Gallery.

Probably either a Clouded Buff, White Ermine (a bit late perhaps) or Ruby Tiger larva.

Good website for identifying lepidopteran larvae: Eggs, Larvae, Pupae and Adult Butterflies and Moths.
