Hi Not sure but maybe beetle is some sort of weevil?

the weevil is a vine weevil, if you found it near potted plants then it may well have laid it's eggs in there, the grubs when they hatch will munch through the roots.
In glasshouses/ potted plants this is a bady, but if it's just in the garden then personally I wouldn't worry about it, the grubs will still eat roots obviously but in a garden there's so many roots to chew on that they probably won't be targetting one plant like they do when trapped inside a pot!!

thanks for that guys....just to say that we do indeed have lots of potted plants...mostly tomatoes at the moment though plenty of others...its the first weevil ive found, though im guessing there will be plenty more...oh well...
