I got sting by a catarpillar :( help ID

i dont have a pic, and i barely got a look at it (it stung my neck, then i crushed it)
it did look like an Oak Hawkmoth catarpillar BUT it was brown

any thoughts?

it was about 24mm long btw

24mm seems small for a hawkmoth caterpillar. They will start to turn red or brown when they start to pupate. Was it a hairy or a smooth caterpillar? I don't believe caterpillars sting but if they are hairy then the hairs can cause irritation.

yea thats what i thought, but it was smoothe, and it hurt, and now its itchy

In that case I would have done the same.

I can't understand how it hurt you then, although they do have a horned tail so maybe it caught you by accident with its tail. Maybe someone else might come up with a suggestion.

Pretty confused in this camp too....
Is there an Oak Hawk in the Uk? Personally haven't come across any caterpillars that bite or sting, unless hairy ones causing rashes as stated. Puss moth cats will spit acid if (highly) provoked...but other than that???? Pls let us know what it was if you ever find out, I for one am dying to find out!

well it could have been a poplar hawk cat, but rong colour...it wasnt a puss moth, that i know...
