| | | caterpillar cocoons in timber - ID please? I've just found this row of cocoons 'glueing' two scaffold planks together used for flooring in my greenhouse. There was a wooden box on top which was also stuck down - I had to use a spade to prize the box off the floor and the planks apart. There's a 6" cavity between the planks and the soil with loads of gaps to the outside.
The caterpillars are sulphur yellow and fast wrigglers! that red thing is 2ft long bolt cutter

It's highly likely that you are spot on - as there are two separate 'buff tailed' bumble bee colonies in mouse holes underneath that same decked area and also twenty year's of beekeeping wax detritus that must have fallen through the planks!
