Caterpillar id please (sorry, no pic)

Hi All
Found a very strange caterpillar but no camera to hand. Thought you'd be worth a try though.

It was approx 3cm, quite fat and a darkish green, but fading to paler in the middle then darker again with some grey entering the palette towards the head. It appeared very 'concertina'd' with each 'fold' being very narrow. The most distinctive thing was that it had a definite head - to the extent that it looked like a bit stuck on. The head was a creamy yellow with brown features and had what looked like a child's drawing of two eyes and a smile. The front three pairs of legs were larger than the rest. It had a good grip too - nearly had to tear it off my finger.

Curiosity in desperate need of satisfying !

Possibly a sawfly larvae you would need a photo to get an ID.

Thanks. Think it was trichiosoma triangulum. Couldn't've done it without you.

Possibly a relative as this species is American i believe. We do get other trichiosoma here in Britain though.
