caterpillar ID please

Hello,

I was clearing out our garden earlier, and found a caterpillar in with a load of rubbish I was about to bin.

Could anyone please ID it for me - it was about 2.5-3 inches long, and looked like a snake head. Head segmented from the body.
I moved it to the front garden and put it under a couple of doc leaves - but am really interested what it is,

i cannot get the photo to upload at the moment, but it looks very similar to this - that i found in the Gallery, except it was a browny/grey rather than green.

ok, I've been reading this great site - and now realise it was an elephant hawkmoth - what a beautiful moth!

Am going to see if i can find it in the morning to see if i can overwinter it! my little girl would be soo excited to see it emerge.

Got a suitable tub, and loads of willow herb and fuschi ain my garden - so fingers crossed its still there.
