| | | Larva for ID please Found this one on the reeds at Crossness...
It was munching it's way through the mealy plum aphids...
Anyone know whaty it is? And am I correct in thinking that its carnivorous nature means it's definitely not a moth or butterfly caterpillar?

| | | Re: Larva for ID please Dave, in case you're interested there is a fieldguide to Syrphidae larvae for about £15, by Graham Rotheray.
I don't have it myself so can't comment on it personally, just know of it's existance! |

| | | Re: Larva for ID please Thanks Jason. Just looked on Amazon and they only have 1 used copy at £58.75. As this is only the second hoverfly larva I've ever found I think I'll pass for now! It would be nice to have if they ever do a reprint though...

| | | Re: Larva for ID please One called WildlifeBooks has it for £15 - and new! (I asume the other is an original copy of the first print? No idea - just shop around!)
As for finding larvae - just get leaf-turning! Look particularly around aphid-infested areas, as females will seek-out aggregations and lay eggs right in the thick of them so they have an immediate and viable foodsource after emerging.

| | | Re: Larva for ID please Nice one Jason - I've just ordered it!
Shouldn't have too much trouble finding hoverfly larvae in my garden as there's no shortage of aphids.

| | | Re: Larva for ID please Let me know how good it is, I may just practice what I preach! It'd be nice to be able to put a Genus to larvae. |

| | | Re: Larva for ID please It arrived today Jason and it looks like a lovely little book. Bags of detail and hundreds of black and white illustrations in the text plus a series of colour photos at the back. You live near me don't you? You'd be very welcome to borrow it.
It looks like my larva is a Platycheirus species and "Specialists include P. fulviventris feeding on Hyalopterus pruni on monocotyledonous plants in wetlands" which is exactly what my one was doing so that looks a good bet.
