caterpillar in oak tree

My husband found a large (3cm?) cat. in a baby oak tree. It was trying very hard to be camouflaged and was sage-greeny/brown. It looked like it had patches like a hawk moth on its lower end. did not have camera to hand.

Any ideas?

Can you give a better description please? shape? number of legs? colour? tail spike presence? head colour. Cheers.

Whoops you can tell I am a novice. It was olive green and fat, and that is all I noticed! Next time I shall get my camera out and count legs and generally be more observant.

Yes have a closer look if you can in future, Oak is the food plant of vast amounts of caterpillars with alot of fairly green none descript ones amongst them.
