Caterpillars hanging by threads
Please can you help me identify these little white caterpillars which are hanging from a silken thread. They were descending from a Firethorn in a garden in Norfolk.

Hello Nichola,

They're almost certainly the larvae of one or more species of micro-lepidoptera, possibly one of the Tortricoids. Swinging from a silk thread is an escape mechanism if they are disturbed. After a while they'll climb back up and start feeding again. There are scores of different species that do this.
