| | | Another Unknown Caterpillar! Hello all, can someone shed any light on the creature in the picture? It was around 6cm long and crawling across my garden. |

The caterpillars overwinter and feed up on grasses (esp couch grass) in the spring. Yours looks fully grown and was probably wandering around to find a spot to pupate in. They weave a cocoon on a twig or stalk, straw yellowish in colour and boat shaped, where they stay for 2-4 weeks before emerging as a lovely tan furry moth with small white markings- check out the antennae on the males!!
Called Drinkers as the caterpillars are often seen in the early morning when the dew is still on the grass, leading people to think that they were drinking the dew!

| | | Re: Another Unknown Caterpillar! Thank you k4t3 for the great response, that really was a huge caterpillar. I had just cut the grass too! so he/she had a lucky escape. I looked up some pictures of the moth itself and yes what a pair the males have
