I found an amazing caterpillars nest? that is full of these little guys but I want to know what they are called so I can report it to the local press to see if they are interested. Can you help? I cant find one anywhere.

thanks Lance, yeah that was my suspicion after hours of searching but there seemed to be so many different colours. I was just looking for a consensus, so I appreciate your reply. |

I do wonder because of the nest is it possible it is a tent caterpillar? |

Difficult to say, but I think the big black splodges points to one of the Small Ermines (Yponomeuta spp.). Last year I saw a tent around 6 feet square in a roadside patch of hawthorn with hundreds of caterpillars. | | |
