I saw this one on chalk downland a few days ago,can anybody tell me what it is?sorry for the soft photo.

| | | Re: Which caterpillar?,please. Looks like a Wood Tiger to me, with the blackish tufts and reddish brown on the back. Feeds on low growing plants, hibernates as larva then emerges May time to grow to pupation |

That looks spot on !Its status is local.So a fairly good find,well for me at least ,I'm just getting into moths.Time for me to get a caterpillar book.

I started off with the Observers guides, then Larousse but then my indulgent parents (discovering an invertebrate freak in the family!) treated me to Porter and Skinner on caterpillars and moths (expensive but totally invaluable), they are good but if you don't want the price, try Collins guides- anything with photos rather than drawings...but experience gives you wings, thats why I love this site! |  | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
