Stockgrove country Park, Beds. 14th October 2009.

Length: ~12mm

Evening Bruce,

It's a Sawfly larvae IMO, and looks like one from the Tenthredinidae family.

Thanks Jason and Charlie.

With your help I've Googled several similar larvae. From what I've read I gather sawfly larva have 6 or more proleg pairs (this individual has 7 pair) and only 2 stemmata rather than the caterpillar's 6 (unfortunately the pic is not detailed enough to count them).
