This looks like a staphylinid larva. The head capsule and what you can see of the mandibles looks right. To be doubly sure, you may want to take a closer look at the photo. Among other defining features, staph larvae have 5-segmented legs and only ever one tarsal claw, while carabid larvae have 6-segmented legs and normally paired tarsal claws on their legs.
How big was this larva?
You may be able to work out a sub-family and possibly a genus too.

I have pics of one similar to this, I've got it down as a Rove beetle larva. I got good pics of the legs and can see it has only one claw.

Did you take any photo's of the rear end (spiracles), i suspect this is Ocypus. What habitat was it in? |
