Question Identify white body, black head which pops out both ends of pinl hard tube

What the bejesus is THIS ??!!?? Found half-way up a wall in my dining room. It's a little pinkish tube - out of which a little fellow with a white body and black head pops out of BOTH ends ! Never seen anything like this before.

Have I entered into a 1950s sci-fi film...?

It's a terrestrial caddis larva - Trichoptera. I forget the name. I think there was a thread on here some time ago ..... sorry, see if my memory returns after dinner .... or someone else will know for sure! Nice little thing

I could well be wrong here as I claim very little knowledge of micro moths (I'm a macro lass!), but I reckon it could be a case moth larva of some description. Species of several families do this including the Psychidae and Incurvariidae, plus possibly others (I'm not sure)

Not necessarily - I know even less about Trichoptera than I do Lepidoptera .... we shall see!

Do you have a wool or wool-mix carpet? If you have, it's been eating it.

There are more of them, lots more.
Round the edges of the room, next to the wall; round the legs of your furniture, under anything that sits flat on the floor, however heavy...

Ooer! Never knew there was a 'land' type of caddis larva .. I've seen the aquatic ones .. (probably the best place for them, horrible looking things!)

Am off to Carpet Right for a nylon carpet.

Cheers folks

Re: Identify white body, black head which pops out both ends of pinl hard tube

Trichoptera (Greek: trich, "hair" + ptera, "wings") is an order of insects. Member species, known as caddisflies, sedge-flies or rail flies, are small moth-like insects having two pairs of hairy membranous wings. They are closely related to Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) which have scales on their wings, and the two orders together form the superorder Amphiesmenoptera. Caddisflies have aquatic larvae and are found in a wide variety of habitats such as streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, spring seeps, and temporary waters (vernal pools). The larvae of many species make protective cases of silk decorated with gravel, sand, twigs or other debris.

Re: Identify white body, black head which pops out both ends of pinl hard tube

It's when you hoover next to the wall and find the carpet has disappeared up the nozzle leaving the backing hessian and a faint shadow of the pattern...

I asked what to do about them in a National Trust property, as they have wool and silk carpets and tapestries; apparently there isn't much since the EU banned the insecticides, just pheromone traps and freezing if the article is small enough.
