found this caterpillar in my back garden, any ideas what it is and possibly what plant its on,

The plant looks like a Sallow, Salix sp. Think the larvae may be sawfly larvae of some sort. |

I'd second the sawfly ID ... not sure what the species would be though but if you contact Andy Halstead at RHS Wisley then he might be able to give you a better idea  |

Yes Croesus maybe Croesus septentrionalis.
