| | | Strange white larva This odd white larva was one of an amazing collection of inverts we saw today. Is it a sawfly of some sort?
The white powdery covering came off like chalk dust.

I have seen a very similar larva identified as a sawfly larva (seen Sept '06) - but that probably doesn't help you much  .

| | | Re: Strange white larva Thanks both. I've never seen one of these. I thought that the white colouring made it look like a bird dropping, so perhaps a good disguise.

Chris | Yes it could be WHITE ALDER SAWFLY Eriocampa ovata, it loses the powder in the last instar and is green
