| | help to id please  On lifting the lid to clean out the bird box I came across these,I assume they are wax moth as there were signs of a bees nest and some dead bees in there as well, could someone id please,cheers.

After some research I think you are right with Wax Moth, either Lesser Wax Moth, Achroia grisella or Wax Moth, Galleria mellonella. They predominantly feed inside honeycombs, but will feed on detritus such as that found in nestboxes too. We see them in nestboxes regularly, but yours is an impressive example.

| | | Re: help to id please Thanks very much for your help Jenny,pleased you confirmed my id, as for cleaning out the box Lance,I only went to this one because earlier in the season it was "buzzing" and had plenty of bees round it,about a month or so ago it all went quiet,so I waited a bit before I decided to take a look.You are right I don't clean my others 'til the winter.

| | | Re: help to id please No worries Richard. As for cleaning boxes now - go for it, it's fine - we are into September now and any breeding activity has long since ceased for the season. The RSPB state that they can be cleaned out from August. |
