| | | Mystery Caterpillars Hi there,
The other weekend i recieved a phone call from my mum, who was all in a panic 'there are weird maggot things crawling out of a strange fluff all in the summer house door.' I didn't have a clue what she was on about, but to day they were there in the summer house again. They had legs so they were not maggots as she thought, although they do look like that.
I managed to find to dead larvae, both of different ages. The smaller one of the two is bright yellow with a brown head, some tiny darker spots are present along the side of the body and it has very fine hairs on it.
The larger one is a darker yellow, with a light brown head, no body markings but the same fine hairs.
The substance that has jammed up the door on the summer house looks like loft insulation material, same colour and texture. The larvae are inside this, there is also a type of web over it too, but I looked at ermine moths and they don't look anything like what I have.
Any kind of help would be great as they have now started eating into the wood, and we dont really want them moving into the garden and destroying that.
I can get photos if needs be.
Cheers Cara |

| | | Re: Mystery Caterpillars Could be the caterpillars of the wax moth. They produce a material that is very like loft insulation. |

| | | Re: Mystery Caterpillars Could be - the larva feed on honeycomb inside bees nests though. Do you have a bee problem? |

| | | Re: Mystery Caterpillars We have had a lot of bumble bees this year, but nothing in the shed where these are. Apparently there were a lot of bees in a bush close to where the shed is, But I didn't think bumbles had nests in the conventional sense ( I could be wrong though) | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
