| | | Pale Tussock larvae rescue ! I was mooching through a local concrete jungle shopping centre on route to the yummy used book shop when this luminous green object on the floor caught my eye...thinking it was a kids toy...i thought it was a furry eraser thing they have on ends of pens...i then relaised it was a stunningly beautiful furry caterpillar...but it was slap bang in a huge paved concrete area and i couldnt believe it hadnt been squished by shoppers feet.
I tried a few times to entice it onto a stick...no go...kept curling up...didnt want to handle it as i figured those green hairs would cause a reaction...tried to get it between two ringpulls i found...by now i had drawn a crowd of oohing and aaahhing pensioners and some kids and mums...eventually i got my leather key fob and he crawled onto that...i carried him to the nearest shrubby area i could find and of he went.
Its a first sighting for me and didnt expect to find him making a beeline for "Icelands"...hope he was not on route to somewhere important and i have now ruined his journey but didnt want him to get squished...i since looked him up and found out this stunning looking caterpillar turns into a rather dull brown moth ( in the same way as a vapourer and others) it amazes me how the most beautiful larvae turn into the dullest insects in a reverse of the classic ugly duckling story i guess ! |

| | | Re: Pale Tussock larvae rescue ! A knight in shining armour, eh? Bet the women thought he's a nice caring guy! Personally I think Pale Tussocks are attractive looking moths in subtle way- they certainly have hairy legs.
There's quite a few moths where the caterpillar is much smarte- Sycamore + Alder Moth are 2 that spring immediately to mind. Your little fella was probably looking for somewhere to pupate. |

| | | Re: Pale Tussock larvae rescue ! Well done!
I saw my first one of these last week (yet to post the pics) and they are incredible looking. I was quite disappointed when I checked what it would turn into
Seems a few pics also coming in, must be the time of year they make their move.
