Going purely by foodplant I would say Painted Lady.
Yours also has a solid black head (Small Tortoiseshell tends to have white dots on it's head) and red-brownish bases to the spikes which tend to more characteristic of Painted Lady. |

It is a V cardui Painted lady butterfly. Offspring of the recent migration to UK.
