| | | Huge Caterpillar Cocoon identification needed. Whilst walking in Dorset on our holidays last week I saw this at the top of a tall hedge. It is a huge spun caterpillar cocoon housing hundreds of caterpillars. Should should be able to see them all at the bottom half of the cocoon. Some are emerging for what seems, the first time. I have tried to put the best caterpillar close up that I can to help identify them.
I can say that the cocoon was about 8" tall by 5" wide. I have never seen anything like it before! |

| | | Re: Huge Caterpillar Cocoon identification needed. I've just been walking at Uphill, Weston-super-Mare and have found exactly the same thing. What is it? The most common butterflies here are green hairstreak and Chalhill Blue but doesn't fit?
i've uploaded my Photo but can't access it for some reason but it looks pretty much the same as the one above, had lots of baby caterpillars coming out of bottom of sack and a few walking around it.
Have never seen anything like it, nor had the crowd that was starting to gather around it. Help! |
