| | | Stripy spiky orange caterpillar, Devon Uk - does anyone know what it is?
I found several of these in my garden in Devon, uk. They were in the forget me nots and what I think may be buttercups [not flowered yet]. I was weeding and kept coming across these. Any idea what it might be?? |

| | | Re: Stripy spiky orange caterpillar, Devon Uk - does anyone know what it is? I thought it looked about right for the larva of a Knot Grass Moth but now I'm not so sure. I read that they appear later in the year: Quote: |
An early summer species found in a variety of habitats from woodland to suburban gardens. Adults appear commonly at light and will also visit flowers. It rests by day on the trunks of trees and fence posts. The larvae feed from July to September on willow Salix spp., Hawthorn Crataegus monogyna, Bramble Rubus fruticosus, plantain Plantago spp. and probably other trees and shrubs. It overwinters as a pupa. |

I have seen 2 or 3 of these......here's another image....sleeping in the forget me nots.....wasn't sure about the Knotgrass moth as that looks a lot darker in colour but have been through all id books and sites I could find and no luck. Thought it might be a moth of some sort because it isn't like any of the butterflies I see in the garden usually. Still not sure...but I left the weeding for a bit |
